Sports bras with thin straps

The right sports bra can make all the difference in your fitness routine. Whether you’re walking, running or exercising in a gym or studio, you’ll need a sports bra that’s comfortable, supportive and easy to get on and off. Not to mention, it should be durable and good-looking if you’re hoping to check all the boxes. The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab regularly tests to find the best bras for people with small breasts, large breasts and everything in between, along with workout clothing like exercise leggings, running shoes and more. When it comes to sports bra, we combine in-Lab testing (with our specialized equipment) and consumer testing (with real-world workouts) to get a comprehensive analysis on each style. Our picks are either winners from our tests, newer styles with unique features and rave reviews or personal favorites from our fitness and product experts. You can learn more about how we test sports bras — as well as how to shop for your perfect style — at the end of this article, but first, here are the best sports bras you can buy for every type of exercise.

Lululemon Flow Y Bra

Perfect for low-impact exercise like yoga or cycling where you won’t need as much support, this Lululemon style has a smooth, stretchy fabric with thin straps and a Y-back — i.e. even more minimal than a racerback — so you can comfortably move between poses. There’s no wire, so it’ll feel less restricting, but it has removable cups that you can keep in if you want the extra shaping benefits. It’s made with Lululemon’s signature Nulu fabric that’s often used in the brand’s yoga leggings and feels both lightweight and buttery smooth. This fabric has stood up to our performance evaluations, especially for its opacity and sweat-wicking capabilities. It’s designed for A to C cups, but reviewers ranging from A to DD all say it’s a favorite (though some recommend sizing up).

Terez Rainbow Star Foil UpLift Sports Bra

Who says sports bras can’t be stylish? This one stands out for its wide variety of fun prints to match any design preference. Perfect for wearing alone or underneath a top, it’s a personal favorite among staffers in our Lab. “I find myself reaching for this bra more than most of my others,” says Senior Textiles Analyst Emma Seymour. Our analysts also appreciate how it’s super smooth, comfortable and flattering with a high-coverage fit. Plus, it offers light to medium support for most studio and gym workouts. The downside is that it doesn’t wick moisture as well as some others, so it’s not the best choice for extra sweaty exercise.

Lululemon Run Times Bra

Lululemon makes our list again, this time for its high-support style that includes smart design features to keep you comfortable during your run, including sweat-wicking fabric with perforations for air flow, a full coverage design with padded cups, and wide padded straps to prevent digging on your shoulders. Plus, the straps are adjustable and convertible in the back so you can change it to a crisscross if you prefer.Other noteworthy design features include a hook-eye closure so you don’t pull it over your head and a supportive underband to keep it wirefree. Our pros also love the wide cup size range, making it suitable for more runners. This is a newer style that we don’t have as much feedback on yet, but Lululemon reviewers give it rave reviews for its comfort and support.

Athleta Conscious Crop

This low-impact style can be worn as a crop top or under a shirt, giving you the comfort and support of a sports bra with extra coverage and stability around the torso. The fabric is smooth and slightly compressive, plus the racerback looks stylish yet is functional for movement during exercise. It’s a personal favorite of Senior Textiles Analyst Emma Seymour, who says she loves the unique design paired with the fact that it’s comfortable and supportive. It also has removable pads that you can leave in for a rounded look or take out for a more natural shape.

Knix Catalyst Sports Bra

This high-impact bra was designed specifically to minimize breast movement, making it ideal for runners and anyone who has a larger bust. In fact, it was extensively tested against other bras on the market to measure bounce when running. It also has unique ladder straps, which means it’s designed with slots that allow wearers to adjust without losing support. The style is not for everyone — it’s pricey and has more coverage than other bras in this article — but it has excellent features like molded cups to separate and encapsulate and a seamless and breathable fabric to prevent chafing. The sizing works a little differently with this so make sure to check the chart, but it’s designed for 32A through 42F.

Not only is this style made with super soft materials, but it’s also surprisingly flattering for a sports bra: “I get more compliments on this bra than any of my other ones,” says Senior Textiles Analyst Emma Seymour. Its crisscross design is trendy but also adds more support and prevents strap-slipping.The bra is designed specifically for low- to medium-impact activities, and Seymour notes that it runs a bit small and is better suited for smaller cup sizes. It comes with removable padding for optional shaping, and the fabric itself is very smoothing.

Most sports bras are made with synthetic fibers because they wick sweat better than slow-to-dry cotton, but if you prefer the natural feel of cotton, this one’s your best bet. It still has some Spandex in it for stretch and, even though it’s not ideal for intense workouts, users say it’s so soft and comfortable that they even wear it at home as a lounge bra. It’s versatile for a range of body types with band sizes 34 to 50 available. Each three-pack includes a range of color combinations to choose from — and the low cost for three bras means each one costs just a few dollars.

Not only is this bra available in sizes up to 4X, but it also has well-designed cooling features like mesh panels and lining for built-in ventilation and sweat-wicking fabric to help keep you dry. It has wide straps and good compression for comfortable support. Though it doesn’t offer separation for high-intensity exercise, it’s a perfect fit for medium-impact activities like cycling or gym workouts.Other notable features include gel cushioning on the straps so they feel comfy against your shoulders instead of digging in, along with padding in case you want extra modesty and shaping (but it’s removable if you prefer a different fit). And with its keyhole racerback design, you get a compressive benefit without restricting your movement.
